Beginner's Green Smoothie


FINALLY- that's exactly what you're thinking, huh?! In all honesty, I don't know why it took me so long to getting around to film this video for you guys. I'm a strong advocate for making lifestyle changes that will give you long-term results, especially incorporating a green smoothie into your diet daily.

I wouldn't necessarily call juicing a new "trend", however it has definitely gained immense amounts of popularity. Why? Simply because it changes your health in ways you never saw coming! 


My Story


If you've been watching me for a while now then you already know how juicing has impacted my life. I suffered from severe cystic acne for the majority of my teenage and adult life. I was ready to accept defeat and the fact that I was destined to have terrible skin. Despite being in medicine, it NEVER occurred to me that my body was trying to tell me something via my skin. 

You definitely are what you eat!

I've literally been addicted to milk and chocolate milk for as long as I can remember. I drank more milk than any other liquid and unfortunately, sometimes I'd substitute a meal with a few glasses of milk. I loved milk so much (still do, however my health is more important)! I started keeping a food journal (right before I was at my wit's end with my acne) and it changed my life forever. Through the process of elimination I realized that sugar and dairy (especially) were causing me to breakout. Aside from that, I realized that whenever I incorporated greens into my diet my skin radiated the very next day. That's when it hit me- this wasn't going to be a temporary change, much rather a lifelong change that I'd have to make. 

I currently have dairy and sugar sparingly, only when I'm craving it and even then in moderation. I know and have seen that my skin reacts to both, so I'm not as inclined to have it anymore. 

I started incorporating ONE green smoothie into my diet daily. THAT'S IT! I made healthier choices, less processed foods, and one green smoothie. You'll never guess what happened! 

BENEFITS:
  • Within one week I had no new breakouts and my skin was SUPER smooth
  • My hair was shining and growing like never before 
  • My nails weren't brittle and breaking left and right like they used to  
  • TMI, however, my bowel movements were regular 
    • I never really noticed consistency in bowel movements until I started juicing
    • Clean bowel= clean skin...TRUST ME ON THIS ONE! 
  • My skin was radiating and everyone was asking what I was doing differently
  • I lost 10 lbs! 
    • Yes, they were the last 10 lbs that I had been struggling with for quite some time
  • I had A TON of energy and wasn't feeling tired like I always used to 
  • I was finally able to meet the Hb/iron requirements to donate blood
    • Consistently been donating every 56 days ever since
These are just a FEW benefits that I can think of off the top of my head. That was from adding ONE GREEN SMOOTHIE into my diet. JUST ONE! 

**Note: I currently have a green smoothie twice daily. It's more plant/veggie based vs. what you'll be shown in this blog post. The smoothie shown in the above video is very EASY for anyone who's looking to start juicing. You can gradually work your way up with more plant based drinks as your taste buds evolve. 

HOW TO MAKE YOUR OWN SMOOTHIE: 


You don't need to make drastic changes to start juicing. You need to be consistent and you'll start to reap in the benefits. Do it for ONE MONTH and I promise you'll never look back. New year, new me, right?! Give juicing a shot :) 

SIMPLE FORMULA: 
1/2 Greens + 1/2 Fruits + Liquid Base= GREEN SMOOTHIE
*Booster is optional* 

3 (+1 bonus) Steps: ingredients are NOT limited to the ones listed below

#1. Pick a GREEN
  • Baby spinach/kale (good starters especially if you despise greens!)
  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Collard greens
  • Parsley
  • Romaine lettuce
  • Bok choy
  • Dandelion greens
  • Beet greens
  • Green and red leaf lettuce
#2. Pick ONE or TWO FRUITS
  • Mango
  • Bananas
  • Apple
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Acai berries
  • Raspberries
  • Orange
  • Peach 
  • Pear
  • Pineapple
  • Avocado
  • Grapes
  • Papaya
#3. Pick a LIQUID BASE
  • Filtered water
  • Coconut water
  • Coconut milk 
  • Freshly squeezed juice (not store bought!)
  • Nut milk (almond, cashew, etc.) 
Bonus Step #4. Add a SUPER BOOSTER! significantly increases the nutritional value of your smoothie 
  • Protein powder
  • Flax seeds 
  • Chia seeds
  • Hemp seeds
  • Spirulina
  • Goji berries
  • Raw cacao
  • Coconut oil
  • Cinnamon
  • Almond butter
  • Nuts 
Fill your blender/cup half way with greens + 1/2 way with fruits + fill it with your liquid base + add your booster on top
BLEND 

*Please ask for ADULT supervision when using a blender/juicer*

* TIPS * 
  • blend your greens with the liquid base first to help reduce leafy chunks
  • place the heavier fruits in the blender last to help weigh down the greens and make the blending easier 
  • instead of adding ice, add frozen fruits
  • avoid adding artificial sweetners (the fruit will help mask the harsh taste of the greens- trust me!) 
  • prepare in advance! I like to prepare ziploc bags with freshly washed fruits/veggies in the freezer every Sunday night for the entire week. It saves a ton of time throughout the week!
  • you can store your blended smoothie in the fridge for up to a couple days, however always remember FRESH IS BEST!
